A rundown on Telomeres
Telomeres are repetitive DNA sequences at the end of a chromosome. These protective caps function similar to the aglets in shoelaces and prevent the ends of chromosomes from sticking to each other. Telomeres also prevents the loss of critical genetic information during cell division. Each time a cell divides, telomeres get shorter so that there is no loss to the main DNA strand.
A stage comes when telomeres become too short and prevents the cell from dividing any further, thus resulting in cell senescence (aging) or apoptosis (programmed cell death). Telomeric length is considered as a biomarker for aging, and the shortening of telomeres is associated with age-related, degenerative diseases.
